My Jerusalem Premiere New Song, “Young Leather,” From Forthcoming Album With Brooklyn Vegan

Washington Square Music and Austin, TX-based rock band My Jerusalem are excited to present “Young Leather,” the band’s new track taken from its forthcoming studio album, A Little Death (Friday, June 24). Serving as the album’s opener and featuring a boozy, sexy swagger complimented by the distinct vocals of singer Elle King, “Young Leather” is now currently premiering with Brooklyn Vegan HERE. Pre-order for A Little Death is now live via iTunes, Amazon and Google Play where “Young Leather” and the album’s first single, “Rabbit Rabbit,” can be downloaded instantly with purchase.

“The little death,” or “la petite mort” in French, refers to, well, an orgasm, and somewhere between the literal definition and the slang is where frontman Jeff Klein situated the album. “Like any kid, I was obsessed with death and obsessed with sex. Some people grow out of it and start families and become normal people and some of us just stay the same,” Klein laughs. “I’m still obsessing about the psychology behind death and sex.” This duality bleeds through on the album, which flexes a lurid sexual energy, reminiscent of something between Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Echo and the Bunnymen.

The Low Anthem Announce First Leg Of World Tour

The Low Anthem has announced the first leg of tour dates that will take the band around the world in support of their long-awaited new album, EYELAND, to be released June 17th (Washington Square Music). EYELAND marks the Low Anthem’s fourth full-length recording and first new music since 2011’s SMART FLESH.

The tour begins at the band’s very own Columbus Theatre in Providence, RI. It then moves on to Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY and continues on to Glasgow’s Scotland Broadcast in Scotland on July 13th. More dates will be announced soon. The full confirmed itinerary is below.

An unprecedented collection of multi-dimensional future folk crafted with true vision and emotional depth, EYELAND follows an extraordinary five-year journey for The Low Anthem. What began as a “vague and rather abstract” short story by co-founder/singer/guitarist Ben Knox Miller became real life as Low Anthem immersed themselves in the creation of their own Eyeland Studios, developing Providence’s once obsolete Columbus Theatre into an innovative recording space and live concert venue. EYELAND proves a prism of the album’s inner themes, refracting Miller and co-founding drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jeff Prystowsky’s sonic escapades into a full-blown Möbius strip of music and meaning. Low Anthem’s lofty aspirations and creative capriciousness resonate throughout songs like ”Her Little Cosmos,” “The Pepsi Moon” and “Behind The Airport Mirror,” their elegiac arrangements and lyrical frankness marked by shimmering ambience and a hauntingly defiant tension. Psychedelic in the truest sense of that overused word, EYELAND is a perspective-shifting musical experience at once elliptical and intangible yet still precise and powerfully personal.

The Low Anthem toured the world in support of 2011’s SMART FLESH before returning to Providence to begin searching for a unique new studio space. Their quixotic quest ultimately led to The Columbus, a local theatre built in 1926 as a vaudeville house and shuttered since 2009, “OPENING SOON” promised on the marquee. A large vacant room designed for maximum acoustics, The Columbus offered everything The Low Anthem was looking for – an ideal studio space to begin recording their next album as well as a concert hall unlike any other in the Providence area. Dubbing their new studio as the true life “Eyeland,” the duo immediately set about exploring its sonic capabilities, “experimenting with every bizarre phenomenon of sound we could find,” says Miller. “We just ran around the building with 300 feet of snake, trying to see what we could record.”

Eyeland proved a true beehive of industry as artists and bands from Rhode Island and beyond all approached Low Anthem to play live or cut tracks at the increasingly in-demand facility. EYELAND, the album, “was kept warm,” says Miller, “incubated,” as he and Prystowsky produced and recorded over 30 different acts.

Miller and Prystowsky eventually burrowed their own work, ably assisted by current Low Anthem musicians Florence Wallis and Bryan Minto as well as such first generation members as Jocie Adams, Mike Irwin, Tyler Osborne, and Andy Davis. The four-year process saw the duo pushing their creativity to its threshold by toying with perspective, speed controls, aggressive editing, and progressively more outré approaches. EYELAND’s risky songcraft and sonic experimentalism truly came into focus with the involvement of Providence’s renowned Trinity Repertory Company, which in 2014 invited The Low Anthem to create a new work for their stage. EYELAND was reverse engineered to fit a detailed but still abstract storyline, conjuring a fantastical dreamscape “where the world is a trick of the eye,” says Prystowsky.

“It’s hard to detail the narrative without giving away the surprise ending,” Miller says. “The album exists in the dreamt reality of a few children who experience a traumatic break from innocence when an air hockey table catches fire and burns down one of their houses. The valley that they live in turns into a nightmare of paranoia and then there’s a battle to regain control over their consciousness.”

Widely regarded among the country’s most influential non-profit regional theatres, Trinity Rep will premiere its stage version of EYELAND in 2017. The production – created in collaboration with Providence-based concert director/filmmaker Peter Glantz (OK Go, Wilco, Lavender Diamond, Lightning Bolt) – promises to be as innovative as its sibling album, less traditional musical theatre than what Miller describes as “a large scale sound installation with professional actors and us as the pit band.”

MOTHXR Announce Spring Shows With Charles Bradley & The Neighbourhood

MOTHXR will hit the road this Spring as direct support to Charles Bradley during a string of his West Coast dates. Following their successful European run earlier this year with The Neighbourhood, the band will be joining them again in June for several East Coast dates. MOTHXR is currently on the road supporting Polica (full tour dates below).

While on the road in Europe, the band created a series of “one shot” music videos for each track off of their debut record, Centerfold. Featuring vocalist Penn Badgley and directed by bassist/producer Jimmy Giannopolous, the videos showcase the album with intimate, stripped down visuals. i-D premiered the first video for “Easy” earlier this month, and “Centerfold” and “Stranger” have also since been released. All videos can be viewed on the band’s Facebook, where the remaining videos will be continued to roll out over the next few weeks.

MY JERUSALEM TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM, A LITTLE DEATH, ON FRIDAY, JUNE 24. FIRST SINGLE, “RABBIT RABBIT,” NOW PREMIERING VIA CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

Washington Square Music and Austin, TX-based rock band My Jerusalem are pleased to announce the Friday, June 24 release of the band’s new album, A Little Death. Stream the first single from A Little Death titled “Rabbit Rabbit” via Consequence of Sound HERE.

Though My Jerusalem has been kicking around in some capacity since 2010, A Little Death is the first album with a solidified lineup. Previously, the band had been more of a collective, with contributions from Klein’s revolving door of friends from previous projects, Gutter Twins and The Twilight Singers, and who had also played in bands like Cursive, Okkervil River, and the Polyphonic Spree. Now, with a full-time lineup of members including Grant Van Amburgh (drums), Kyle Robarge (bass), and Jon Merz (guitar, keys, horns), “My Jerusalem is a true band,” Klein says.

Alongside standout tracks like the high-energy “Rabbit Rabbit” and the slowed down banger “No One Gonna Give You Love,” Klein also enlisted the help of another friend on the album’s opener, “Young Leather,” singer Elle King, who contributes background vocals under the song’s raging saxophone. Her timeless voice is the perfect complement to the old-fashioned nature of A Little Death, an album which pays homage to a classic era of rock and roll, one that lacked pretension and focused on honesty in songwriting.

“The album has a throwback vibe to it,” says Klein, who spent many nights walking around the time capsule of an area around his rental home in Brooklyn, among the Russian immigrants and foreign culture of the New York blocks. This setting also provided him with the ability to reflect on the loss of his mother and deal with the family and personal issues he’d put on the backburner for years – another dynamic centerpiece that is largely present within the duration of the record. “There’s a recurring theme of fate, luck, desire, and consequence,” he says of it, “and also, how to be more accountable as a human.”

My Jerusalem will be on tour during April as part of the Communion Music Series and throughout May supporting Against Me! on select dates. Dates below with more to follow.

THE LOW ANTHEM SIGNS TO WASHINGTON SQUARE, New Studio Album Out Spring 2016

Washington Square Music announces the signing of innovative folk rockers The Low Anthem to a worldwide label deal. The band is set to release their fourth studio album this spring as a follow up to the highly acclaimed Smart Flesh and Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, followed by extensive touring in the U.S. and abroad.

“We were gazing dreamily at a river when Beth from Washington Square called us back up to the Big Leagues,” says The Low Anthem’s Jeff Prystowsky. “We are super psyched to hit the road again with a new work.”

“We are very excited to work with the Low Anthem,” adds Washington Square Co-Owner Cliff Chenfeld. “They have a unique artistic vision that is inspiring and engaging.  We look forward to helping them bring that vision to an appreciative audience.”

Providence, Rhode Island’s The Low Anthem formed in 2006 where founding members Ben Knox Miller and Jeffrey Prystowsky met through late night college radio, later becoming baseball teammates and eventually bandmates. They began making their idiosyncratic bedroom folk in 2007, best friends constructing something altogether new from old musical traditions. Since formation the band has released three albums, each created in unique recording spaces. The band’s most recent release Smart Flesh (Bella Union), recorded in an abandoned pasta sauce factory, received critical acclaim from outlets like Paste, NPR, Rolling Stone and The AV Club amongst others. The Low Anthem has performed on such shows as The Late Show with David Letterman and Later… with Jools Holland. They have toured with numerous artists including The Avett Brothers as well as opening for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The National, Emmylou Harris and Bon Iver.

The Low Anthem is Ben Knox Miller, Jeff Prystowsky, Florence Grace Wallis, and Bryan Minto. The Low Anthem is managed by Danny Goldberg of Gold Village Entertainment and represented for touring by Marty Diamond of Paradigm (US and Canada) and Nick Holroyd of Primary Talent (UK and Europe).

The Low Anthem is the latest signing to Washington Square, the alternative-leaning imprint formed by Razor & Tie.  The band joins label mates My Jerusalem, MOTHXR, Austin Plaine and Soren Bryce.

MOTHXR’S DEBUT ALBUM CENTERFOLD AVAILABLE; On Tour This Spring With The Neighbourhood and Polica

“Tragedy is still the best ingredient for beautiful music.” – The FADER

“Musically this song [Touch] is a slinky, falsetto-slick cut full of cinematic synths and a strutting, palm muted guitar line. It’s very cool…there’s something playful in this MOTHXR’s wry lip curl.” – Noisey

“This is sex music” – Huffington Post

MOTHXR’s highly anticipated debut album Centerfold is out today via Washington Square Music. The record is available now on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. For US vinyl orders click HERE. MOTHXR will celebrate the record with an album release show at Baby’s All Right in their local Brooklyn neighborhood before heading off to Europe as direct support to The Neighbourhood this March followed by a US run with Polica in April & May (full tour dates below).

Traveling with minimal analog recording gear, MOTHXR spent four weeks recording their album between Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. The band recorded five songs in five days on their way to completing the eleven tracks that would become Centerfold.

MY JERUSALEM SIGNS TO WASHINGTON SQUARE, New Album Set For Release In Summer 2016

Washington Square Music announces the signing of indie rockers My Jerusalem to a worldwide label and publishing deal. The Austin-based band will release their third full length record this summer, followed by extensive touring in the U.S. and abroad.

“We’re truly excited to work with Washington Square. We miss the feeling of mystery and danger in rock and roll. We want to make sure it doesn’t disappear,” says lead singer Jeff Klein. “Washington Square gets it. This album is a celebration. A really fucked up celebration.”

“We are very excited to have My Jerusalem join the Washington Square roster,” adds Washington Square Co-Owner Cliff Chenfeld. “Jeff Klein and the band write innovative songs and it’s a pleasure to partner with an artist who gets plenty of love from both fans and fellow artists alike. My Jerusalem’s signing to Washington Square is a great example of the progress that we are making in attracting outstanding indie artists to the label.”

Jeff Klein founded My Jerusalem in 2010 after several years of being a touring musician in critically acclaimed bands The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins. Originally conceived as a collective, My Jerusalem really hit their stride in 2013 with the release of Preachers, their second full length album (The End Records). Recorded in under three weeks by Spoon drummer Jim Eno, Preachers fully encapsulates the sound of the band and was released to rave reviews. My Old Kentucky Blog premiered the album in its entirety, calling out Klein’s “smokey baritone vocals.” The Austin Chronicle said, “The band soaks romantic obsession in a cinematic pool of brooding rock.” My Jerusalem have toured extensively with a variety of artists including Courtney Love, Spoon, Peter Murphy, Heartless Bastards and The Lemonheads amongst many others.

My Jerusalem is Jeff Klein (lead vocals), Grant Van Amburgh (drums), Jon Merz (guitar, keys, horns) and Kyle Robarge (bass). My Jersualem is managed by Charlie Caplowe and Chris Trovero and represented for touring in North America by David Strunk at United Talent Agency.

My Jerusalem is the latest signing to Washington Square, the alternative-leaning imprint formed by Razor & Tie. The band joins label mates Austin Plaine, Soren Bryce and MOTHXR.
